SIREN OFF: A few years ago Buena Park had trouble attracting applicants to its small police force. But now, with just one police officer position open, the competition is stiff: 500 applicants for that single job. . . . “It’s very unusual--but it’s a sign of the times,” says Chief Richard M. Tefank. But the news is even worse for the police applicants: The position won’t be available until at least January because of the city’s hiring freeze.
