CAMARILLO : Council OKs Study on Police Station
The Camarillo City Council has decided to hire an architect to study how to convert a community center into a police station.
The council Wednesday authorized spending $20,000 for an architect to determine if the Bill Esty Community Center, 3701 Las Posas Road, would be a good building for a new police station.
The city also decided to spend another $20,000 to secure a 90-day option on the 27,000-square-foot property.
The building is owned by a theater company, which leases space to a church, two-day care centers and a catering business.
The 55-member police force, which the city contracts from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department, is crammed into a 5,000-square-foot building on Palm Drive in downtown Camarillo.
The building was originally a bank and also served as City Hall.
