Sharon Humphrey-Peterson, a self-described political activist from Pacoima, said Thursday that she intends to begin raising money to run for the seat of retiring City Councilman Ernani Bernardi in 1993.

Humphrey-Peterson, who worked on the presidential campaign of former Gov. Jerry Brown this year, filed papers with the city Ethics Commission, saying she will raise funds to run in the 7th Council District, which covers the northeast San Fernando Valley.

She joins three others who have declared their intent to raise campaign funds for Bernardi’s seat. The 80-year-old councilman has said he will retire at the end of this year.

Humphrey-Peterson described herself as a USC graduate who has lived in the district for 44 years and has owned two businesses, a Pacoima wig shop and a snack shop in the Mission Hills Bowling Alley.

She now works as a hairdresser in Tarzana.

A member of the Chatsworth Democratic Club, she said she does not intend to accept campaign contributions over $100.
