Was $105,00 FCC Fine a ‘Victory’ for Listeners?

In regard to the Federal Communication Commission’s fine of $105,000 against KLSX-FM parent company Greater Media Inc. over Howard Stern’s radio program, which was the result of Al Westcott’s efforts (“Stern Foe Calls Fine a ‘Victory’ for Kids,” Oct. 29):

I am terribly concerned that the actions of one single individual can influence a committee of unelected bureaucrats to possibly force off the air the funny and entertaining Stern, thus depriving millions of listeners of a radio program they choose to listen to.

Westcott, who doesn’t even live in Los Angeles, says that this heavy fine resulting from his obsessive, three-month crusade to get Stern off the air is a “mammoth victory--not for me and not for Howard Stern, but purely on behalf of the children of the country.”

Westcott and the FCC should understand and realize that responsible parents do not need a governmental agency “protecting” their children from Stern; it should be the individual parents’ responsibility to monitor what their children can and cannot hear on the radio, the same way it is the parents’ responsibility to keep Playboy magazine away from them. It’s plain common sense!

Besides, if the government wants to protect my children, I’d rather they be protected from crime, hatred, drugs and violence.
