Don’t Put Academics Second to Athletics

Share

Eric Shepard’s article (Nov. 3) suggesting Loyola High is “setting an ugly precedent” by electing not to participate in the made-for-television Reebok Bowl because the game interferes with senior final exams is appalling.

For your information, Mr. Shepard, despite Loyola’s location, students commute from as far away as Malibu, La Canada and Pacific Palisades because of its academic, not athletic, standards. Roughly 95% of its graduation class annually enrolls in four-year universities.

If an ugly precedent is being set here, I believe it is being set by people such as Mr. Shepard, who insist on placing athletics ahead of academics.
