South Carolina violated NCAA rules when an ineligible basketball recruit stayed in an athletic dorm, the school’s compliance officer confirmed. A school spokesman said other violations were probable.

David Didion, compliance director, said Cortez Barnes, a junior college player who is academically ineligible to enroll at the university, stayed in the dorm at a time it would have been a violation of NCAA rules.

Barnes told The State newspaper in Columbia, S.C., that the basketball staff knew he stayed with junior forward Emmitt Hall at the dorm.
