Missile Alert System: Rockwell International Corp. in Anaheim has received a contract from Grumman Corp. to help develop components for a second generation of systems for detecting launches of ballistic missiles.
The follow-on early-warning system will be built by Grumman Space & Electronics Group in Irvine. Rockwell’s Electro-Optical Center in Anaheim will produce infrared sensors under a subcontract during the next 14 months.
The system, which will replace a 20-year-old predecessor, provides an early warning of possible nuclear war by detecting missile launches around the globe. The value of the contract was not disclosed. Engineering and manufacturing of the system is scheduled to begin in 1994.
