SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

A memorial service for City Councilman and former actor Jack Kelly will be today at 11 a.m. at the amphitheater near City Hall, 2000 Main St.

Kelly, 65, died Saturday after suffering a massive stroke three days earlier.

Those scheduled to speak at the service will include Kelly’s daughter, Nicole; Father Kerry Beaulieu of St. Bonaventure Church; businessman and Kelly family spokesman Fred Speaker; Bob Mayer, an owner of the Waterfront Hilton at Huntington Beach resort; and Roger Work, a former executive with the Huntington Beach Co.

Kelly was the first elected official to die in office in Huntington Beach since a city trustee died in 1927, according to records kept by City Clerk Connie Brockway. In those days, elected city officials were called trustees, not council members, Brockway said.

Speaker, who served as campaign manager in Kelly’s election in 1990, said he believes he was the last person to talk with Kelly about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, the day of the stroke.

Speaker said the two chatted about the local election results, Nicole Kelly’s upcoming birthday and about a golf date.
