Share

A free workshop on back-yard composting will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon today at Rancho Tapo Community Park in Simi Valley. The program, sponsored by the city, will take place on the east side of the park near the East County Courthouse on Alamo Street.

The workshop is designed to teach residents how to improve the quality of their soil and reduce the amount of yard waste they throw away. Topics will include worm composting, how to mulch, grass recycling and waste-efficient yard care.

Workshop participants are encouraged to park in the courthouse lot and bring a blanket or lawn chair.

A 1989 California law requires all cities to reduce waste by 25% by 1995 and 50% by the year 2000. City officials said 20% of Simi Valley’s garbage is yard trimmings.

The composting workshop and other recycling programs were set up to help the city meet its waste reduction goals.
