PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Evans Still Third String, but He’s Not Forgotten

One thing is clear since the Raiders switched back to Jay Schroeder at quarterback after two consecutive defeats with Todd Marinovich as the starter.

The Raiders, with a 3-6 record, can lose with either quarterback. So is third-string quarterback Vince Evans next?

Evans has been with the Raiders for six seasons but this year has been cut and re-signed twice.

He has been in uniform for six games as the Raiders’ 46th player, which meant that he could play only if both Schroeder and Marinovich were injured. He has yet to be activated.

“(Playing) Vince Evans is something that I’ve thought about,” Shell said. “But at this time he’s still our third quarterback.”

With Schroeder starting, the Raiders are hoping that tight end Ethan Horton will get on track.

Last season was Horton’s best as a pro: He caught 53 passes for 650 yards and five touchdowns. However, in nine games this year he has only 18 catches for 290 yards and no touchdowns.

“We need to get our offense going,” Shell said. “We need to get Ethan more.”
