CITY COUNCIL

WILD WEST: Approved a proposal to temporarily close several Downtown streets Monday for a ceremony marking the opening of a new Wells Fargo branch at 4th and Spring streets. A stagecoach and horses will be driven from City Hall down Spring Street to the new building. Spring Street between Temple and 3rd streets will be closed from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Spring Street between 3rd and 4th streets will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

REHAB LOAN: Approved an $85,700 loan to Bradley E. Kraemer, owner of property at 1232-34 S. Lake St., in the Pico-Union area to rehabilitate the low-income rental apartments.

MARIACHI FESTIVAL: Approved a proposal to temporarily close 1st Street between Boyle Avenue and Pleasant Street in Boyle Heights Nov. 22 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. for the Festival de los Mariachis de Los Angeles.

FUNDING HELP: Approved spending $711 to help fund the 5K/10K Southeast Area Run For Youth scheduled for Dec. 12 in South-Central.

HOMELESS ENCAMPMENTS: Councilman Mike Hernandez introduced a proposal aimed at speeding the cleanups of homeless encampments. He asked officials to develop a revised Homeless Cleanup Authorization Policy within 30 days.

CHRISTMAS PARADE: Hernandez requested that Figueroa Street be closed between Avenues 53 and 61 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6 for the Highland Park Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Highland Park and Eagle Rock chambers of commerce.

RECREATION & PARK BOARD

LUNCH PROGRAM: Approved the lunch program for the 1993 school year. The Recreation and Park Department has provided free lunches to some L.A. students since 1975. This year’s program will cost $872,556, most of it federal funds.

HOW THEY VOTED

AGING AGENCY MOVE: Approved a proposal by Hernandez to allow the city’s Department of Aging to move its offices from 600 S. Spring St. in Downtown to 2404 Wilshire Blvd. in the MacArthur Park area. Some council members argued that the new location would be safer, larger and provide more parking. Passed: 11-2. Voting yes: Richard Alatorre, Joan Milke Flores, Hernandez and Mark Ridley-Thomas. Rita Walters voted no.
