Martina Navratilova, seeded fourth, opened the Virginia Slims Championships by beating Switzerland’s Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere, 6-2, 6-2, at New York. Top-seeded Monica Seles took only 50 minutes to join Navrtilova in the quarterfinals, stopping Nathalie Tauziat of France, 6-1, 6-2.
