BURBANK : System to Purify Tainted Well Water Inaugurated

Water, water everywhere, but not a drop to drink.

That was the trouble until Burbank officials installed a $1.1-million water treatment system this month that allows residents to drink from water wells that had been contaminated by manufacturers’ pollutants.

“This marks our first step in restoring our water independence,” said Burbank Mayor Robert R. Bowne during a dedication ceremony of the water filtering system Tuesday. “This will provide up to 12% of our water supply.”

The discovery of high levels of the industrial solvents in city water forced Burbank to stop using its 10 water wells in the 1980s and instead purchase all of its water from outside suppliers.

The city started sending the filtered water to homes on Nov. 2. Eight wells remain contaminated.
