Eighteen inmates were injured in a brawl between about 60 blacks and Latinos at the Peter J. Pitchess Honor Rancho in Castaic, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said Tuesday.

Nine inmates who suffered puncture wounds and cuts were treated at the jail ward of County-USC Medical Center on Monday, Deputy Angie McLaughlin said. Nine others were treated at the jail’s medical facility for minor cuts and bruises.

A five-minute fight erupted about 6:30 p.m. Monday in a dormitory at the medium-security jail’s North Facility, which houses 46 black and 43 Latino inmates, McLaughlin said. More than a dozen deputies responded to the brawl, which subsided as the officers entered the dormitory.

No damage was reported. Deputies recovered three jail-made knives, McLaughlin said. The cause of the fight had not been determined Tuesday.
