Glendale : State Honors City Programs

The city has won state recognition for its efforts to train its employees on cross-cultural issues and for a hillside brush cleanup program.

The awards from the Institute of Local Self Government, an adjunct of the League of California Cities, went to 20 cities in the state for innovative and cost-effective municipal service. Gov. Pete Wilson made the presentations this week at the Capitol.

“We were the only city in the state to win two awards,” said Councilwoman Ginger Bremberg, who accepted the awards at the Sacramento ceremony.

The award for cultural diversity, Bremberg said, was given for the city’s efforts to train employees on cross-cultural sensitivity. The public safety award was given for a Fire Department program that told residents how to clear dry brush from their property and for the department’s efforts to clean brush from public lands.

Bremberg said a formal presentation of the awards will be made at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.
