Compton : Council Rejects $10-Million Claim of Wrongful Death
A $10-million wrongful death claim against the city and Police Department stemming from the one officer-involved shooting death during last April’s riots has been rejected by the City Council.
The family of Brian Edmund Andrew claim that police fired on Andrew without provocation April 30 on north Chester Avenue.
Police said Andrew was chased to Chester Avenue out of an east Rosecrans Avenue shoe store carrying two pairs of shoes and a quart bottle of beer. They also say he threatened Officer Stone Jackson with the bottle. During the foot chase, Jackson lost his baton and pulled out his gun, Lt. Percy Perrodin said.
Jackson grabbed Andrew’s hand to keep from getting struck with the bottle, and both men fell to the ground, where Jackson’s gun accidentally discharged into Andrew’s face, Perrodin said. Now that the city has rejected the claim for damages, Andrew’s family is free to sue the city in Superior Court.
