Shayne Corson passed the 300-point mark of his career with a goal and an assist as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Vancouver Canucks, 4-2, Wednesday night at Edmonton.

Corson, obtained from the Montreal Canadiens on Aug. 27 along with Brent Gilchrist and Vladimir Vujtek, for Vince Damphousse and a draft pick, has 301 points in 439 games, including 125 goals.

Gilchrist, Scott Mellanby and Kelly Buchberger also scored for the Oilers.

The Canucks scored on their first shot but took only 15 shots thereafter.

Hartford 5, St. Louis 2--The Whalers earned their 400th NHL victory on their 10th try by scoring three times in three shifts in the second period at Hartford.

Andrew Cassels, Pat Verbeek and Mark Janssens scored 1:41 apart as the Whalers ended a nine-game winless streak (0-8-1) and won at home for the second time in 11 games (2-8-1).

New Jersey 3, Buffalo 2--Alexander Semak’s goal early in the second period gave the Devils a victory at Hamilton, Canada, before the smallest neutral-site crowd this season.

Only 6,972 tickets were sold at Copps Coliseum, where a Toronto-Quebec game Tuesday night drew 17,026. Anti-Sabres sentiment lingers with some Hamilton fans who believe the team’s owners lobbied against NHL expansion to the city.

Minnesota 5, Washington 4--Mike McPhee and Shane Churla scored in a 47-second span of the third period and Russ Courtnall scored the game-winner with 12 seconds left, rallying the North Stars at Landover, Md.

Minnesota had trailed by scores of 3-0 and 4-2.
