The riots that rocked Los Angeles last spring were the worst civil disturbances in the nation in more than a century. They spread from South-Central Los Angeles across the county and resulted in a profound loss of life, unprecedented property damage and incalculable human suffering.

PROPERTY DAMAGE 1,700 businesses damaged. 1,148 structures, valued at $431 million, damaged or destroyed, including 72 homes and apartment buildings. $775 million in insurance losses. $4 million damage to city-owned structures. $8.1 million damage to public facilities.

HUMAN SUFFERING More than 26,000 people sought emergency assistance. The Federal Emergency Management Agency disturbed $106.3 million in grants, including: 78.7 million reimbursing the city for repairs and law enforcement costs. $5.2 million in disaster unemployment assistance to 3,200 people. $11.5 million in rent and mortgage aid to 3,000 people. $3.6 million for personal losses by 2,000 families and individuals.
