LOS ANGELES : Bradley Seeks Alternative to Sidewalk Restrooms

Share

Mayor Tom Bradley said Thursday he has begun discussions with several homeless service agencies near Skid Row that may be willing to expand their hours to give homeless people access to restroom facilities.

The announcement followed the mayor’s scuttling on Wednesday of a plan by a homeless advocacy group that wanted to put 33 portable toilets on the sidewalks of downtown Los Angeles for use by homeless people.

Bradley blocked a $23,000 funding agreement from the city’s housing department for the project, saying that the use of non-locking, 24-hour toilets would cause safety and health problems.

On Thursday, the mayor said he plans to divert the funds that were to be used for the project to agencies that agree to expand the hours their restrooms are available. Bradley said he plans to convene a meeting of city department heads to seek a permanent solution.
