Walnut : Toll-Free Trails Preferred

The City Council agreed last week to launch a protest of “toll trails” instituted by Los Angeles County.

Beginning Jan. 1, the county will require users of its 330 miles of hiking, biking and equestrian trails to carry an annual pass costing $23. Violators could be fined about $50.

Councilwoman Bert Ashley called the fee system ludicrous and urged residents who use the county’s Schabarum Trail in Walnut to forgo the passes.

“This is just a little much,” she said. “I hope nobody will come in and buy one.”

Ashley was chosen by the council to spearhead a protest to the County Board of Supervisors. The council also directed city staff to draft a petition that will be sent to county officials.

The annual passes will be available for purchase at City Hall beginning Dec. 1.
