NEWHALL : 539-Unit Project OKd by Planners

Share

A 539-unit residential development in Newhall was unanimously approved Monday by the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission.

The project by CJB Development Inc., situated between Haskell Canyon Road and Bouquet Canyon Road, also includes five acres of commercial zoning. It is on only 167 acres, which means that some lots are smaller than county regulations usually require.

A spokesman for CJB said the smaller lot sizes would enable the company to charge less for the homes--about $200,000.

The approval, which must be seconded by the county Board of Supervisors before it becomes final, included a zone change from agricultural to residential, a conditional-use permit and an oak-tree permit that allows removal of 23 of the 37 scrub oaks on the property.

Under county oak-tree regulations, the trees must be replaced by 46 saplings. However, the Santa Clarita Oak Conservancy objected to the removal.
