A North Carolina State basketball player was found dead in his dormitory room Monday night. Police said he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Anthony Robinson, a 6-foot-9 junior forward from Havelock, N.C., was found dead after he failed to show up for an exhibition game against Brandt-Hagen.

Police were still investigating and details were not being released Monday night, said Sgt. J.T. Davis of the Raleigh police.

The team and coaching staff were told of the death in the locker room after the game.

“This is a very sad tragedy, not only for our basketball team but for everyone who knew Tony,” N.C. State Coach Les Robinson said in a statement. “He was a good person and never caused us the first problem. He was cheerful and was liked very much by everyone on the team.

“We are completely shocked.”

Robinson averaged 0.4 points in 11 games last season.
