THOUSAND OAKS : 3 Officials to Attend Conference on Cities

Three Thousand Oaks officials are bound for New Orleans to attend a conference that could help the city maneuver through upcoming changes in federal policies.

City Manager Grant R. Brimhall and City Council members Judy Lazar and Alex Fiore will attend the four-day National League of Cities conference that begins Sunday.

Brimhall said their attendance will cost taxpayers about $3,000.

The council members are scheduled to attend workshops that will outline funding changes proposed by President-elect Bill Clinton.

Those changes could help Thousand Oaks in its quest to find financing for a number of programs, including transportation, housing and waste management projects.

Lazar is scheduled to participate on a panel discussing how cities are revitalizing their downtown business districts.

The City Council recently approved a $50,000 study to examine how to bring more businesses into the district bordered by Thousand Oaks Boulevard and the Ventura Freeway.

“I hope to get information that we can apply to Thousand Oaks,” she said.

It is the second time this year that council members have attended a National League of Cities conference. In May, they met with congressional representatives during a legislative conference in Washington. Those meetings aided in the acquisition of 231 acres of open space from the Resolution Trust Corp., Brimhall said.
