Glendale : Redevelopment Hearing

Share

Public hearings on proposed formation of a second redevelopment zone in Glendale opened Tuesday and will continue Dec. 8 before the City Council, which also serves as the Redevelopment Agency.

The second zone, a strip along San Fernando Road, may be designated as commercial and industrial as early as Dec. 15, officials said.

Meantime, agency officials are continuing negotiations with the Glendale Unified School District over how much of the estimated $712 million in property taxes to be generated over the 35-year-life of the projected zone will be allocated to the schools. District officials are demanding 10%, and the city is offering 2%--the minimum suggested by state guidelines.

The city has only one redevelopment zone, formed in 1972 in the downtown business district. The zone triggered construction of the Glendale Galleria shopping mall and high-rise development along Brand Boulevard.

The proposed second zone would consist of a 750-acre corridor along the western border of the city from Burbank on the north to the Los Angeles city boundary on the south.

The Dec. 8 hearing will start at 4 p.m. at City Hall, 613 E. Broadway.
