As part of its yearlong 125th anniversary celebration, First Congregational Church of Los Angeles on Nov. 22 dedicated its refurbished courtyard and gardens, creating an outdoor oasis for the congregation and visitors.

“We wanted to beautify the property but also provide a visible sign of our commitment to the community,” said the Rev. Steven Berry, the church’s senior minister.

In recognition of the church’s efforts, Los Angeles Beautiful presented the congregation with its Community Pride Flag.

The church, established in 1867, is the oldest continuing Protestant church in Los Angeles, Berry said. The congregation, founded by the Rev. Alexander Parker in the home of Amanda Scott, moved four times before settling into its Gothic-style church at 540 S. Commonwealth Ave. in 1932.

The 125th anniversary celebration continues through June.
