La Puente : Landfill Study Approved

Share

The Puente Hills Landfill’s governing board voted 17 to 1 Wednesday to approve an environmental study on potential effects of a proposed expansion, which some neighbors oppose.

The directors of the Sanitation Districts of L.A. County responded to the neighbors’ complaints by saying the distance between a Hacienda Heights residential area and the proposed expansion area would be increased. Originally, the buffer zone would have been 1,000 feet wide. The enlarged buffer would be 1,250 feet wide, and trash would be deposited no closer than 1,500 feet from the residential area.

After the current county permit for the dump expires in November, 1993, the operators want to increase its capacity to 75 million tons of trash over the next 20 years.

The environmental study is a step required in the expansion process. Now that the board has approved the study, the landfill staff will submit its plans to the county Regional Planning Commission.
