L.A. Monument

Re “Monument of the Unknown Government Employee” ( Nov. 19):

I have worked for the City of Los Angeles for 25 years. Most of my friends are also city employees. We are proud of the work we do and that we are able to help keep the city running, especially in this time of short money, fewer people to do the jobs, low morale and threats of layoffs. That is why I am unable to understand why the so-called monument was placed in City Hall.

John Marshall seems to believe that those of us who complained about his monument spend our days hanging out around a coffeepot. It isn’t true because we are just too busy keeping things going. I believe that most are angry because his monument reinforces the negative image that seems to be held by the public and denigrates city employment at a time when employees are working harder than ever just to keep the basic services available to the residents of this extremely large and complex city.

We are doing our best. Instead of a slap in the face, it would be nice if Marshall had placed a gold star on his podium and said, “Thanks.”
