As it did a year ago, Pt. Loma Nazarene won the championship of the Triton Tipoff men’s basketball tournament, taking Saturday’s wild final from Redlands, 133-116, at UC San Diego.

Shawn DeLaittre scored a game-high 39 points and had nine rebounds to give new Crusader Coach Dan Davis his first tournament victory at PLNC.

After a tight first half, PLNC led by only 58-56, but scored 75 points in the second half. DeLaittre, the tournament’s most valuable player, did a good deal of that damage, but finished two points shy of the tournament record he tied in Friday night’s victory over UCSD.

Gylan Dottin scored 14 of his team-high 18 points in the second half to lead the University of San Diego to a 103-96 exhibition victory over Marathon Oil at the USD Sports Center.

Doug Harris and Joe Temple added 17 points apiece, and, like Dottin, both did most of their scoring in the final 20 minutes. Dottin also had 14 rebounds.

The Toreros, who open the regular season against San Diego State on Tuesday, trailed by 13 early in the second half, but took the lead for good with 7:56 left.
