Parenting Is Still an Open Book

“The Parent Trap” (Nov. 18) serves to discredit parenting classes and books simply because many are conflicting or sometimes confusing.
Parents should not be discouraged from seeking help. It has been my professional and personal experience that parents need to learn more than just the basics regarding the raising of their children. There is no other job that people do with so little preparation that has such profound implications.
Childbirth instruction classes are full and it’s great to know what to expect will happen during childbirth. But, whether or not one takes a childbirth class, the baby will be born. Yet attendance in parenting classes is significantly lower.
Each child and parent is a unique and complex individual with a myriad of characteristics, qualities and abilities. No single approach will be right for everyone. Words and ideas should be translated and incorporated into one’s own style.
