CYPRESS : Physical Education Dean Is Appointed

Instructor Diane Henry, who began her teaching career at Cypress College 15 years ago as a part-time trainer, has been named dean of physical education.

Henry, 41, replaces Larry Mercadante, who served as dean for 13 years before being named vice president of Student Development Services this summer.

Henry was selected for the position from a field of 30 applicants, according to college officials.

The Westminster resident received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical education from Cal State Long Beach.

Henry began her career with Cypress College in 1978, working her way up from women’s trainer to become a full-time employee. In 1982, she became an instructor.

As dean, Henry’s goals include allotting funds for deferred maintenance projects, establishing a more comprehensive agreement with Cal State campuses and hiring a vocational fitness specialist.

However, she acknowledges that all of these proposals hinge on the state overcoming its current fiscal crisis.

“For now, we’ll be maintaining facilities and staff as best as we can,” Henry said, adding that she does not foresee implementing any significant changes until the fall of 1993.

Henry officially took over as dean on Nov. 2.
