Faulk Named SDSU Football MVP

Marshall Faulk was named San Diego State’s most valuable player at the Aztecs’ annual player awards banquet Monday night.

Faulk, who became only the fifth player in NCAA history to lead the nation in rushing in consecutive years, was also named the teams’ outstanding offensive back.

Darnay Scott was selected as the outstanding receiver, and other position awards went to Tony Nichols (offensive lineman), La’Roi Glover and Jamal Duff (defensive linemen), Darrell Lewis (defensive back), Tracey Mao (linebacker) and kicker Andy Trakas (special teams).

The most improved player award went to linebacker Mark Roberts, and most inspirational to Mao. President’s awards for academic and athletic excellence went to Lewis and cornerback Damon Pieri, and the most improved scholar award went to tight end Mark Ziegler.

Named postseason team captains were quarterback David Lowery, Mao and Trakas, and scout team awards were handed out to Marlon Manassa and Micheal Driver.

HIGH SCHOOLS

The Torrey Pines girls’ volleyball team will play host to Fullerton Sunny Hills in a CIF State playoff Division II semifinal tonight at 7 in Del Mar.

Led by senior outside hitter Carey Mar, the second-ranked Falcons (26-6) advanced by beating No. 3 Torrance Bishop Montgomery in a five-game match on Saturday and Huntington Beach Edison in four games last Tuesday.

Unseeded Sunny Hills (21-2) upset top-seeded Bakersfield Highland and No. 4 Pacific Palisades Palisades on the road.

This will be Torrey Pines’ third consecutive home match in the state playoffs, and the winner of tonight’s Southern California championship match will play the Northern California champion in the state final Saturday at 4 p.m. at Cal State Fullerton.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

St. Martin’s (Wash.) College made 20 of 32 second-half shots in routing Point Loma Nazarene, 83-47, in a nonconference game at Golden Gym.

Christy Stevens had 14 points, Stacee Eggers 12, and Danielle Phipps seven rebounds for the Crusaders (2-2). SMC (6-2) got 18 points and 13 rebounds from Carrie Thompson and outscored PLNC, 49-24, in the second half.
