THOUSAND OAKS : Study Recommends New Bus Routes

Share

Thousand Oaks should begin several new bus routes to better serve students and senior citizens, a recent report on public transit needs says.

Consultant ATE Management & Service Co. recommends that the Thousand Oaks Transit system replace three routes serving the western, central and eastern areas of the city with eight new routes.

Three of the new routes would serve Newbury Park, three would serve central Thousand Oaks and two would serve the Westlake area, according to the report. The new routes would not abandon existing areas of service, but would take buses deeper into neighborhoods and beyond the main thoroughfares.

Transportation Manager Roy Myers said the consulting firm is studying whether the city should develop a central route down a thoroughfare, with circular routes connecting to the main route.

The $100,000 report was commissioned after complaints from riders about the city’s transit system. City buses now carry nearly 700 passengers each day, and many passengers complain of slow service and the lack of weekend buses.

The citizens traffic committee meets Jan. 20 to discuss the report, city Traffic Engineer John Helliwell said.
