Saturn Workers to Vote on Altering Contract: The United Auto Workers union has scheduled a Jan. 13 referendum on keeping its innovative contract with Saturn Corp. or rejecting it in favor of a traditional UAW pact. The Saturn contract calls for a partnership between union members and management, unlike traditional labor-management agreements, which often result in adversarial relationships. Annual interviews with the rank-and-file show that 13% of the 6,000 workers have grave concerns about the current contract and 20% say the contract should be improved, union officials said. UAW officials said Saturn management prefers to continue operating under the current contract.
