Edward L. Thomas; Former Editor of San Diego Union

Edward L. Thomas, 75, who was editor of the San Diego Union. Born in Chicago, Thomas moved to San Diego with his family and graduated from San Diego State College. He began his career with United Press wire service, and served as a war correspondent, covering the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He worked in UP bureaus in Mexico City, Honolulu and San Francisco. Thomas also held public relations posts for Creole Petroleum Corp. in Caracas, Venezuela, and with Carl Byoir & Associates in Los Angeles. He joined the San Diego Union as an assistant city editor in 1952, and served as city editor and managing editor before being named editor in 1968. He resigned from the post three years later because of an eye problem. On Thursday in Borrego Springs of heart failure.
