COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : No. 1 Duke’s Victory Is Krzyzewski’s 300th
Duke returned to No. 1 and gave Coach Mike Krzyzewski No. 300.
The Blue Devils, who earlier in the day regained the top spot in the rankings it held all last season, routed Northeastern, 103-72, Monday night at Durham, N.C.
It was Krzyzewski’s 300th victory in 410 games at Duke, the team he has coached to five consecutive Final Fours and back-to-back national championships.
It was expected Duke (3-0) would have trouble getting ready for the Huskies (1-1) only two days after it beat then-No. 1 Michigan, 79-68. There wasn’t that much trouble, however, as the Blue Devils built a 10-point lead early in the game and stretched it to 50-29 at halftime.
Bobby Hurley scored 10 points during a 19-4 run over the final 5:28 of the first half and finished with 20 to lead Duke. Grant Hill had 18 and Thomas Hill 13.
Duke was 30 for 39 from the free-throw line. Northeastern was three for seven.
No. 2 Kansas 91, Emporia State 56--Eric Pauley keyed an early second-half run at Lawrence, Kan., that carried the Jayhawks (3-0) over Division II Hornets (4-1) in the first game between the schools in 45 years.
No. 6 Michigan 92, Detroit Mercy 77--Chris Webber scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead the Wolverines (2-1) at Ann Arbor, Mich.
Tony Tolbert, who earned two letters at Michigan before transferring to Detroit Mercy and sitting out last season, scored 22 points for the Titans (2-1).
No. 7 Seton Hall 65, Miami 56--Terry Dehere got nine of his game-high 25 points during a 19-0 second-half run and the Pirates rallied from a 12-point deficit in a Big East game at East Rutherford, N.J.
Seton Hall (5-1, 1-0) held Miami (0-3, 0-1) to one field goal for the final 11:41 and converted 17 of 22 free throws down the stretch in finishing the game with 25-4 run. Miami made only one of its final 10 field-goal attempts.
No. 25 Nebraska 86, The Citadel 46--Freshman guard Jaron Boone scored 15 points to lead the Cornhuskers (3-0) at Lincoln, Neb.
