La Puente : Police to Be Focus of Meeting

Share

Complaints by a newly-organized citizens group about the performance of the Sheriff’s Department in policing the city prompted the City Council to schedule a discussion of the issue at its Dec. 22 meeting.

“La Puente Parent Power” has focused its attack on Capt. Michael Nagaoka, head of the Industry Sheriff’s Station, saying he has been unresponsive to complaints about alleged slow response times and a lack of bilingual deputies and emergency dispatchers. More than 50% of the city’s population is Latino.

Mayor Louis Perez and Councilmen Edward Chavez and Joseph Alderete said they support Nagaoka and are willing to sign a letter expressing their confidence. Councilmen Charles Storing and Manuel Garcia said they want Nagaoka to respond in writing to the group’s allegations.

“I’ve heard those accusations before,” Nagaoka has said of the allegations. “But the station has been extremely responsive.”
