Police have made a fifth arrest stemming from the slaying of a Santa Barbara landlord who was shot after collecting rent in a Port Hueneme apartment building.

Jose Reyna, 27, of Oxnard was arrested Thursday on suspicion of being an accessory to murder for assisting in destroying evidence, a police spokeswoman said. Reyna attempted to conceal evidence when he threw a firearm off the Port Hueneme jetty into the ocean, Port Hueneme Police Sgt. Ted Snyder said. He said divers are searching for the weapon off the jetty.

Reyna was walking on Saviers Road near his home when he was arrested, Snyder said. He was being held at Ventura County Jail on $5,000 bail.

The arrest was the latest in the killing of Richard Albert Schell, 55, who was shot once in the heart Dec. 1 while he sat in his pickup truck after collecting rent in the 300 block of East B Street.

The Ventura County district attorney’s office filed charges of murder and attempted robbery Friday against three other suspects, Jose Luis Arreguin, 20, George Ignacio Pena, 23, and David Lee Soto, 19, all of Oxnard. Their arraignment has been postponed until Dec. 21.

A 16-year-old juvenile suspect in the slaying, who police said is Reyna’s nephew, turned himself in to police Tuesday evening and is in Juvenile Hall awaiting a court hearing.
