James Campbell, 80, Laguna Beach Inventor, Dies
James Richard Campbell, an inventor who received hundreds of patents and a longtime Laguna Beach resident, has died at age 80.
Campbell, who was born June 13, 1912, in Pasadena, graduated in 1934 from the California Institute of Technology. As an inventor, he was issued patents in the aerodynamic, electrical and metallurgical fields.
After his retirement as an engineer for General Electric in 1945, Campbell moved with his family to Laguna Beach.
He died Dec. 9.
He is survived by his wife, Anne, of Laguna Beach; his sister, Ruth Howell of Pasadena; his daughters, Janet Keating of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Deborah Hale of Wayland, Mass.; his son, James Bartlett Campbell of Los Angeles; and five grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to the UCLA Alcohol Research Center, in care of Dr. Ernest Noble, 760 Westwood Plaza, Los Angeles, Calif. 90024.
