City Sets Hearing on Tianguis Plan

A proposal by the Vons Companies Inc. to build a larger Tianguis supermarket at 1831 W. 3rd St. and its request for a permit to sell alcohol at the store will come before a city zoning administrator on Tuesday.

The $8-million project would involve demolishing the 25,000-square-foot store and replacing it with one of 42,337 square feet, expanding the operating hours from 6 a.m. to midnight, and extending the parking lot into an area zoned for residential use, although the number of parking spaces would be reduced from 169 to 158.

The existing store, which employs 57 people and was established in 1978, would continue operating until two months before the new one opens, said Mary McAboy, a Vons spokeswoman. Vons is also seeking a conditional-use permit for the sale of alcohol at the supermarket. Alcohol would likely constitute less than 1% of the store’s total sales, according to a document submitted by Vons to the city zoning office in support of its application.

The hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. in Room 250-B, City Hall, 200 N. Spring St.
