Giants Lose Fifth in Row, to Cardinals

TEMPE, Ariz. — Johnny Johnson ran for two touchdowns and safety Tim McDonald had a fumble recovery and an interception to help the Phoenix Cardinals end a four-game losing streak with a 19-0 victory over the New York Giants on Saturday.
It was the first shutout of the Giants (5-9) since San Francisco’s 12-0 victory on Nov. 23, 1980. The Giants have lost five in a row. It was the Cardinals’ first shutout since a 24-0 victory over Buffalo on Nov. 15, 1981.
Johnson, who had a career-high 156 yards in a team-record-tying 36 carries, scored on a five-yard run during the second quarter, capping a drive that began after Eric Swann’s sack of rookie Dave Brown in the end zone for a safety.
Greg Davis kicked a 26-yard field goal during the third quarter for the Cardinals (4-10) and Johnson went 42 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.
The Giants’ Rodney Hampton, who had a personal-best 167 yards in the teams’ earlier meeting, had 51 yards in 12 carries.
The Cardinals gave up 70 yards rushing and 131 total to a team that rushed for 260 and gained 399 overall in the victory at the Meadowlands in October.
