A fight near a downtown San Diego Trolley station led to the death of one bystander and the wounding of three others, police said.

Shot dead in the incident Monday night was Alvarado J. Rodriguez, 40, no known address, who was found in his wheelchair near the scene of the fight on the east sidewalk of 11th Avenue and C Street. He had been shot in the chest, authorities said.

Two men who ran from the fight were taken to a hospital, where they were treated and released, said San Diego Police Lt. Barbara Harrison. Authorities could not confirm which hospital.

Jose Ramirez, 26, was shot in the leg, and a bullet grazed the head of Jose Garcia, 27, Harrison said. A bullet also grazed Roberto Guzman’s head, but the 21-year-old man did not require hospitalization, Harrison said. Authorities did not have addresses for the men.

Witnesses told police that the 9:58 p.m. shootings followed a fistfight among a crowd of people in the middle of the 1100 block of C Street, around the corner from the busy trolley station, Harrison said.

There are usually 20 to 30 people in the area at all times of the day, Harrison said, adding that police periodically have problems with drug dealing in that block.

Police said a man drew a gun during the fight and began firing. A trolley security guard called police.

Four men were seen running from the scene. Rodriguez, Ramirez, Garcia and Guzman were in the area but not actively fighting, Harrison said.

There were no suspects in custody, Harrison said, adding that detectives suspect the shooting was drug-related.
