A Compton man was arrested and police searched for three other men suspected of robbing a credit union Wednesday.

Santa Ana police arrested Kenneth Lehman Hammond, 26, on suspicion of robbery near Harbor Boulevard and McFadden Avenue after the van in which he was riding collided with a second van at that intersection, police said.

After the collision, the four suspects jumped out of their disabled vehicle and one of them stole the second van at gunpoint, police said. That suspect drove away, leaving his three accomplices behind, Garden Grove Police Sgt. Doug Morrill said.

Santa Ana police who responded to the collision learned that one of the vans was reportedly involved in the credit union robbery. They began searching the area for suspects and arrested Hammond as he tried to escape on foot. Two other suspects remain at large, police said.

The stolen van was described as a 1992 Dodge Caravan with California license plates 4J61031.

Garden Grove police, who are investigating Wednesday’s credit union robbery at 13902 Harbor Blvd., said the holdup is similar to one in Orange on Dec. 7.

In Orange, four men wearing ski masks robbed a credit union at gunpoint and escaped with about $40,000 in cash, police said. Officials did not disclose how much was taken from the Garden Grove credit union.

After the Orange robbery, the suspects got into a vehicle which they later abandoned a short distance away, police said. No one was reported injured in either robbery, police said.
