Dr. Jonas Salk’s lab coat, conductor Leonard Bernstein’s baton and Sandy Koufax’s baseball glove are among the items featured in a new display about American Jewish role models at the West Valley Community Center.

The Wall of Fame exhibit includes memorabilia of a dozen exemplary Jews including Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, Barbra Streisand, Rabbi Stephen S. Wise and Space Shuttle Challenger crew member Judy Resnik.

Honorees were chosen by a committee of community leaders and there are plans to add other notables to the display in the future.

“It’s a perpetual exhibit. This way, knowing it will be a changing thing, people will be checking on it,” said Marcia Motkin, administrative assistant at the center.

Encino resident Sherman Margoles created and developed the exhibit to honor the Bernard Milken Family, a major contributor to the center that opened in 1987. Funded by donations, the display was designed by Studio 7 of Glendale and was unveiled Sunday.

The exhibit can be viewed from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to Sunday. The center is located at 22622 Vanowen St., West Hills.
