Joan Gardner; Voice-Over Artist

Joan Gardner, a voice-over artist and writer who earned two Emmy awards and a Peabody Award, has died at an Encino hospital. She was 66.

Miss Gardner, of Encino, died Dec. 10 of cancer, said her husband, film producer Edward Janis.

Born in Chicago, she came to California as a child and acted on stage in Los Angeles. She wrote for Mike Stokey’s “Pantomime Quiz” and “Time for Beanie” television shows, earning the awards.

She began her career as a voice-over artist on various Bob Clampett cartoons. Miss Gardner married Janis on Dec. 8, 1960. The couple provided the voices for “Spunky and Tadpole,” an early children’s animated color series.

She also performed voice-overs in television specials and Saturday cartoons, including “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” with Fred Astaire and Mickey Rooney, Tiny Tim in “Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol,” “Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail” with Danny Kaye, “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons.”

Miss Gardner also acted in television commercials, wrote screenplays, books and music for film.

Her husband is her only immediate survivor.

A funeral was held Monday, with burial at Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood. Pierce Brothers Valhalla Mortuary handled the arrangements.
