The executive director of Ross Perot’s nationwide citizens’ lobby, United We Stand, America, has resigned and Perot has taken over most of his job, a spokesman said Thursday.

Orson G. Swindle III, a former Ronald Reagan Administration official who had headed United We Stand since July, left on amicable terms to return to his wife and home in Honolulu, said Clay Mulford, the organization’s general counsel.

Swindle said he and his wife decided that “I just had to get back to my life.” He said he and Perot had discussed the idea of Swindle running the lobby group from Honolulu but decided that was impractical.

The group was formed by Perot and his volunteer legions after he first dropped out of the presidential campaign in July. The tax-exempt group is intended to advance Perot’s goals of political reform and sound economic policies.

The Texas tycoon plans to temporarily finance the lobby and hopes to sign up as members many of the more than 19 million people who voted for him after he returned in October to the race for the White House.

Mulford said Perot plans to handle most of Swindle’s job functions.
