A former San Fernando Valley civic leader who was married to two women simultaneously has been convicted of murdering his wife in Florida during a confrontation over his double life.

David R. Miller, 42, former president of the Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce and founder of the San Fernando Valley Leadership Foundation, faces 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced in February, said Steve Plotnik, assistant state attorney in Seminole County, Florida.

A Sanford, Fla., jury took three hours Thursday to find Miller guilty of the Sept. 15, 1991, shooting death of his 33-year-old wife, Jayne, in the parking lot of a storage facility near Orlando.

During the weeklong trial, witnesses testified that Jayne Miller had grown suspicious and hired a private investigator. The investigator tracked down Miller’s other wife.

When David Miller married the victim in 1991, he had been married to Dorothy Miller for six years, a period when he ran a Granada Hills printing business and became a high-profile civic leader. David and Dorothy Miller moved to Orlando in 1989, but then he asked Dorothy Miller to go to Pennsylvania to live with family members.

Meanwhile, David Miller continued secretly living in California, where he met and married Jayne. The couple then moved to Sanford.

At the time of her death, Jayne and David Miller were separated. Jayne Miller had said in a request for a restraining order that Miller verbally and mentally abused her and threatened her life. She was shot after she and Miller met at a storage unit that they shared.

Witnesses testified that Jayne Miller was sitting in her car when her husband fired a 9-millimeter pistol seven times into the car, striking his wife five times in the chest and head.

Miller’s attorney had argued that Miller was temporarily insane when he killed his wife, having became distraught and suicidal after learning that his two wives knew about his double life.
