COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Northridge Women Fall to Rice

Freshmen reserves Jessica Garcia and Tammy McCallum combined for 34 points to lead visiting Rice to a 72-63 victory over Cal State Northridge in a women’s nonconference basketball game Friday night.

Garcia, a point guard, had a game-high 19 points and five steals, and McCallum, a forward, had 15 points and nine rebounds. Rice is 4-1.

The Matadors (2-4), who shot 38% from the field, got 14 points from forward Haily Griffith and 13 points and a personal-high 16 rebounds from guard Janel Vega.

Jody Bittner (11 points) and Mary Jean Espino (10) also scored in double figures for Northridge.

In other women’s games:

Pt. Loma Nazarene 88, Cal Lutheran 69--Christy Stevens scored 31 points and made six of 13 three-point shots for the visiting Crusaders (7-3) in a nonconference game.

The Regals (3-6) made only nine of 36 shots in the first half and fell behind 56-25.

Nicole Albert and Aimee Snyder led Cal Lutheran with 23 points each. Snider made 11 of 16 shots.

Albert also had six steals, and Kristin Wegner had nine assists.

Evelyn Albert had nine points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.

Antelope Valley 67, Moorpark 63--Visiting Antelope Valley held off a late Moorpark rally in a nonconference game.

Sophomore forward Sasha Garrison had 19 points and 13 rebounds, and Bernice Atkinson (13 points) and Niani Dunn (11) also scored in double figures for Antelope Valley (6-6).

Aimee Grimes added eight points and 11 rebounds for the Marauders.

Moorpark (5-6) got 18 points from Tamara Pacheco and 14 from Diem Nguyen.

Cypress 60, Glendale 53--Kara Fitzgerald had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and Stephanie Ball added 14 points and six steals for visiting Glendale (6-6) in a nonconference game.

Oxnard 79, Cypress 78--Freshman Lance Fay took a pass from Marlowe Durmiendo and went the length of the court to score on a layup at the buzzer, giving Oxnard a dramatic victory in a semifinal of the Cypress tournament.

Oxnard trailed, 78-74, with 13 seconds left before Stevie Amar hit a three-point shot and Bryan Hakala of Cyrpess missed two free throws.

Fay finished with 17 points and nine assists, and Art Wallace added 19 points and 12 rebounds for Oxnard (10-4).

Canyons 104, Irvine Valley 90--Jason Joynes had 27 points and 16 rebounds and Deshawn Harvey had 23 points as the Cougars (6-7) eliminated Irvine Valley from the Cypress tournament in a consolation semifinal.

G.C. Marcaccini had 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Cedric Jones recorded 14 assists for the Cougars. Steve Tampus added 14 points, including nine on three-point baskets.

Canyons led at halftime, 50-39, and made 14 of 18 free throws in the game.

Chris Kostoff had 21 points for Irvine Valley (7-6). He was seven of 20 on three-point tries.

Canyons will play Victor Valley at 4 p.m. today for the consolation championship.
