Share

In response to “Rock’s New World Order,” by Robert Hilburn and Chuck Philips (Nov. 29), and their rankings of the 40 most powerful people in pop music:

I’ve always had the utmost respect for Hilburn. We have seen eye to eye on various “truths”--until now. Now I’m wondering if we’re living on the same planet.

You want to tell me that Michael Jackson and Prince--the two men most responsible for not only saving, but also redirecting and revolutionizing, the music industry--are not as powerful as convicted artist Axl Rose, who made your list? Please.

It would take days to outline what Michael has done for the recording industry. Before the release of “Thriller” in 1982, the industry was on crutches, and radio was more segregated than South Africa. And how many of those “suits” you listed had their careers enhanced by having the name Michael Jackson on their resumes?

As for Prince: If God is too busy, call Mo Ostin at Warner Bros. Records and ask him how important and powerful Prince is.
