Traffic Citation Might Become Bonanza for Courteous Drivers

Share

Motorists, hark! If between now and the new year you happen to spot--through your rearview mirror--that fearsome black-and-white, its red lights flashing, calm your heartstrings and smile, even as you are handed a citation. It may turn out to be a bonanza.

Under a project called the Safe and Courteous Driver Campaign of the Assn. of California Insurance Companies, launched to promote safe holiday driving, 10 courteous drivers in Altadena--those who mind their road manners--will be spotted, followed and handed a $50 U.S. Savings Bond along with a key chain and a good driver certificate.

“We’re going to talk to them real fast as we pull up,” said Bob Caldwell, captain of the Verdugo Hills branch of the California Highway Patrol. “We don’t want anyone to have a heart attack.”

The bonds are being offered by Calfarm Insurance Co. in conjunction with the CHP and the Safety Center Inc., an organization affiliated with the National Safety Council.

There will be 100 such awards for good drivers statewide.
