With a solid group of six returning veterans and several promising newcomers, Flores is shooting for 18 victories, which would make the 1992-93 Pioneers the winningest team in Western history. The 1984-85 team, led by Melanie Williams, was the previous best with an overall record of 17-5, 8-2 in League. “If we perform like we’re capable, this could be the best team ever at Western,” Flores said. Leading the returnees is Gibson, an all-league performer who averaged 11.3 last season. Gibson, who is also the league girls’ sprint champion in track, is expected to provide leadership and athletic skills. Collins and Watley, the league’s 400-meter champion in track, provide height for rebounding purposes. Flores has several promising players up from his 16-4 JV team last season, led by Rojas and Denton. Montoya, a freshman, has potential at point guard. Flores expects to field a team that is strong in man-to-man defense and senior leadership. Much of his hope hinges on improved shooting in the 12- to 17-foot range.
